Le Laboratoire
Paris, France
Two blocks from the Louvre museum in Paris, Le Laboratoire required the transformation of the historic Parisian urban fabric into a modern industrial loft to house an art and science cultural center. Accommodating existing construction dating from the past several centuries, the project carved, from stone and cast iron, spaces for the exhibition and creation of works about the intersection of science and art.
The project uncovers an existing glass block floor to bring atrium light into gallery and gathering space. The existing atrium at entry level is reclaimed as a circulation node, allowing access to office space, newly created street level retail, and the cultural center entry. Moving into Le Laboratoire, a stair is cut through three levels, creating and connecting display, meeting, and entertainment spaces.
